Duruelo Convent High School was established in the year 1963 in response to the invitation to take over the girls’ section of St.Theresa’s High School, Bandra.
The School aims primarily at the education of the Catholic community and the preservation of the Catholic faith and religious practices. Hence, preference in admission to the school will be given to Catholic girls. Admission will however, to the extent possible, be given to girls of other communities without distinction of caste or creed.
With a view to preserving our Catholic faith, classes in the Catholic religion will be conducted and it will be obligatory for Catholic children to attend these classes.
The School stands for academic excellence, development of skills an character formation based on the love of God and the service of people as modelled on Jesus Christ with a view to achieving its educational goal.
The Cross is the emblem of Christianity. The lotus is the emblem of our country, India. The blue background stands for loyalty and constancy to God, parents, school and ideals. The red stands for courage, sacrifice and love. The green represents our hope of life eternal. This is the beautiful badge of Duruelo Convent School.
St. John of the Cross was born in Frontiveros, Spain in 1542. His father Gonsalo de Yepes, of aristocratic birth, married Catalina Alvarex, socially of very humble birth but of noble character. Widowed when John was but seven years old, Catalina moved to Medina del Campo where she supported her three children as a weaver. Inspite of penury, the younger son received a good elementary education from the sisters. So avid was the boy for learning that his oldest brother related: “Our Mother used to say that they once went to look for him at midnight and found him studying among the faggots”.
When the youth was above fifteen, a gentleman of Medina impressed by John’s brilliance, arranged for him to attend the Jesuit School and, in order to help with the tuition obtained a job for the boy as helper in the local hospital. After four years of high school John joined the Carmelite Order.
John had piercing dark eyes, a modest manner, a quiet but ready smile. He was very short in stature, about five feet tall. He worked with St. Teresa ardently and zealously for Carmel’s glory. He is ranked among the Doctors
